World Bicycle Day 3rd June 2022

World Bicycle Day celebrates all that is wheeled and mechanically driven by our legs or arms! It is a day to shout about the all the benefits of using a bicycle which is fundamentally a simple, affordable, clean and active means of transportation. Durable and fixable, for many the bicycle is transformative. Bikes are for fun, for work, for exercise. Urban, rural, off road and on.

History of World Bicycle Day – the Geeky Bit

The United Nations established World Bicycle Day on April 12th 2018 with a resolution declaring June 3rd as the appointed day. The resolution was unanimously adopted by all 193 member states of the UN General Assembly. The resolution was passed for many reasons – but at its heart is the fact that the impact of the bicycle on society is quite transformative — even the poorest people get access to basic transport with the bicycle.

The history of World Bicycle Day is super interesting (for the bicycle geeks out there!). A U.S.-based Professor, Leszek Sibilski founded a grassroots campaign with one of his sociology class to promote a U.N. resolution to designate a day for the advocacy and celebration of the humble bicycle all over the world. This developed in 2015, to an academic project, exploring bicycles and their role in development. The project continued to Gian momentum and evolved into a massive movement backed by ‘Sustainable Mobility for All,’eventually culminating in the UN resolution.

The logo, designed by Isaac Feld, shows bicyclists riding on various types of bicycles around the world. The message is simple – that the bike serves all of humanity and bridges the gap between people from different walks of life.

Get on Your Bike Today!

Nick-at-the-Blonde-Beet

Celebrate World Bicycle Day this bank holiday. Pull out those bikes, even if it’s only for a quick spin to one our lovely coffee stops down town. Don’t forget though, if you are pulling the bikes out for the first time in a while to do a basic check on your brakes and fittings! Bikes don’t have to shiny, they don’t need the latest tech, its doesn’t matter if they are muddy or rusty or rattle (a little bit!!!). Conveiniently, as I write this…. here is owner Nick arriving at the Blonde Beet, Stamford, just in time for the lunch time rush!
